Is Tide a bank?

No — but Tide business accounts are powered by ClearBank, which is a licensed UK bank. Eligible deposits held through the ClearBank-powered account can receive FSCS protection up to £120,000, subject to eligibility and FSCS aggregation rules.

The direct answer

Tide Platform Limited does not hold its own UK banking licence. Tide is not a bank. Its product range includes Business Current Accounts powered by ClearBank and, for some members, e-money accounts powered by PrePay Technologies Limited (PPT).

ClearBank-powered Tide Business Current Accounts, normally associated with sort code 04-06-05, can hold eligible deposits protected by FSCS up to £120,000, subject to eligibility and aggregation rules. PPT-powered e-money accounts, normally associated with sort code 23-69-72, hold safeguarded funds rather than FSCS deposits.

Tide, ClearBank and FSCS: the three-part structure

Four parties and terms matter. Tide Platform Limited runs the app and member relationship but is not a bank. ClearBank is the licensed bank behind Tide Business Current Accounts (normally sort code 04-06-05). PrePay Technologies Limited (PPT) is the electronic money institution behind some Tide e-money accounts (normally sort code 23-69-72). The FSCS protects eligible deposits held with licensed banks.

Eligible deposits in a ClearBank-powered Tide Business Current Account can qualify for FSCS protection up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm, subject to eligibility and aggregation rules. PPT-powered e-money funds are safeguarded and are not FSCS deposits.

Key fact: Tide Business Current Accounts are powered by ClearBank (a licensed UK bank). Eligible deposits can receive FSCS protection up to £120,000, subject to eligibility and FSCS aggregation rules. Always verify the current position on Tide's own terms and the FSCS website, as protection arrangements and limits can change.

Why Tide can still feel exactly like a bank

You get a sort code, an account number, a debit card, Faster Payments, Direct Debits and standing orders. For day-to-day trading there is no functional difference you would notice, and the app experience is often smoother than a high-street equivalent. The difference from a traditional bank appears mainly in two places: Tide does not offer overdrafts or lending in its own right (it accesses those through partners), and the protection structure — while strong — depends on the ClearBank partnership rather than Tide's own banking licence.

FSCS protection versus safeguarding: the distinction that still matters

For the main business current account powered by ClearBank, eligible deposits can receive FSCS protection up to £120,000. For other products within the Tide app — such as savings features that may be structured differently — the protection arrangement can differ. Always check the specific protection statement for each product rather than assuming the same protection applies across the whole app.

Safeguarding is the alternative protection mechanism used by pure e-money firms: customer funds are legally required to be segregated from the firm's own money so they can be returned if the firm fails. It is a genuine regulated protection, but it is not FSCS deposit protection and works differently in practice.

What this means in practice

  • Check protection for the specific product rather than assuming standard bank-style deposit cover applies automatically.
  • Do not rely on a non-bank for credit facilities you may need later; overdrafts and larger lending are typically bank or bank-partnered products.
  • Expect the same compliance behaviour as a bank — identity checks, source-of-funds questions, occasional account reviews — because the underlying regulatory obligations are similar.
  • Keep a banked second account if resilience matters to you, so a review or technical issue at one provider does not stop your business trading.
  • Use the in-app security tools (two-factor authentication, card freeze, Confirmation of Payee where offered) since fraud protection is a separate question from deposit protection.

Is that a problem?

For most small businesses, no. Hundreds of thousands of UK businesses run happily on non-bank accounts, and the product experience is often better than a high-street equivalent — faster account opening, better invoicing tools, cleaner expense management. It becomes a problem only when a business assumes bank-style protection on a large balance without checking, which is exactly the assumption this page and its companion pages exist to prevent.

How to check the current position yourself

  1. Open Tide's own terms and protection statement for the specific product you use.
  2. Check the Financial Services Register entry for Tide Platform Limited and note the permissions listed.
  3. Look for ClearBank's role stated explicitly on the account opening documentation.
  4. Note the date you checked, since regulatory arrangements and product structures can change.
