Typical account opening timeline
Tide's published onboarding flow is designed for speed. The application is completed in the app or online: you provide your personal details, business information, photo ID and a selfie. Tide's automated systems verify your identity against reference databases and check your business against Companies House (for limited companies). If everything passes automatically, you receive your sort code and account number immediately.
For most sole traders and straightforward limited companies, the entire process takes between 5 and 15 minutes. Your physical Tide card is then dispatched and typically arrives within 3–5 working days. You can add the virtual card to your digital wallet immediately on approval and start using the account the same day.
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Complete application online/in-app | 5–15 minutes |
| Automated identity verification | Instant to 5 minutes |
| Account approval (standard) | Same day, often within minutes |
| Sort code and account number issued | Immediately on approval |
| Virtual card available | Immediately on approval |
| Physical card delivery | 3–5 working days |
| Manual review (if triggered) | 24–48 hours, sometimes longer |
What causes delays
Some applications are referred for manual review. This happens when the automated checks cannot fully verify the information provided — for example, if your documents are unclear, your address history is unusual, or your business type requires additional scrutiny. Manual reviews typically take 24–48 hours but can take longer in complex cases.
Common reasons for delays include: blurry or expired ID documents; a business address that does not match Companies House records; a business type that Tide needs to review manually; or an application submitted outside normal business hours that is not processed until the next working day. If your application is under review, Tide will contact you via email or in-app message to request any additional information needed.
How Tide compares to other providers on speed
Tide is consistently among the fastest business account providers in the UK. Traditional high-street banks (Barclays, HSBC, NatWest) typically take 5–10 working days to open a business account and may require a branch visit. Digital challengers are faster, but Tide's same-day approval in most cases is a genuine differentiator.
| Provider | Typical opening time | Branch visit required? |
|---|---|---|
| Tide | Same day (most cases) | No |
| Starling Business | 1–3 working days | No |
| Monzo Business | 1–3 working days | No |
| Revolut Business | Same day to 1 day | No |
| Barclays Business | 5–10 working days | Sometimes |
| HSBC Business | 5–10 working days | Sometimes |
